» About Cumberland Elementary
Welcome
to Cumberland Elementary School, a family-oriented school
with a tradition of academic excellence. With approximately
500 students and 50 faculty and support personnel, we are
able to get to know your children as individuals. Our average
class size is 19 which allows us to foster strong interpersonal
relationships in a safe school environment. A full-time
nurse is available to assist students as needed. Before
and after school childcare is available on-site for a modest
fee.
The
Cumberland learning community believes:
All
children can learn.
All
members are active participants in the learning process.
We
learn in a variety of ways.
We
learn from and with each other.
"We
are committed to building a learning environment where
all students succeed. Together staff, students,
and parents will foster open, honest communication, respect
for diversity, support for reaching each person’s full
potential, a willingness to take risks, and the development
of democratic values."
Teaching
and Learning
Highly
trained and experienced teachers design lessons that are intellectually
engaging, requiring students to think and reason. Students
create products and performances that demonstrate their understanding
of the content. The Indiana Academic Standards serve as the
basis for the curriculum, methodology, and assessment used
in the classroom.
Cumberland Elementary School's diverse student population
provides an enriching educational environment. Students interact
daily in a climate of acceptance and understanding. This diversity
offers students opportunities to learn about their own strengths
and challenges as well as those of their classmates.
Beyond
the Basics
Cumberland
Elementary School provides a solid foundation for each student
in their individual pursuit of academic excellence. We also
regard the arts as an essential component of a well-rounded
education. Certified professionals instruct students in art,
music, physical education and media skills.
Various enrichment and educational activities go beyond enhancing
student knowledge to nurture the development of the whole
child. Friendships are fostered in French Club, Spanish Club,
the Nature Club, and the Math Pentathlon competition. A sense
of community spirit and pride is developed through such events
as the Cumberland Costume Carnival, Family Math Night, Family
Art Night, and musical programs.
Our
School Community
In
the West Lafayette Community School Corporation children attend
Cumberland Elementary School for kindergarten through 3rd
grade. They advance to Happy Hollow School for 4th, 5th, and
6th grades and, finally, to the West Lafayette Jr./Sr. High
School, one of the state's leading secondary schools in academic
performance, for grades 7-12. Being
in close proximity to Purdue University positively impacts
the community in a variety of ways. Academic excellence is
valued and supported both at home and at school. Our collaborative
relationship with Purdue University and the fact that a large
percentage of our students’ parents are affiliated with the
university enables us to access a wealth of human and educational
resources.
Technology
Students utilize technology to facilitate the learning process.
Qualified computer technicians assist teachers and students
with their technological needs. Internet accessible classroom
computers, mobile laptop computers, and digital cameras are
available for student use. In addition, a computer lab equipped
with twenty-four networked computers, laser printers, and
scanners support the instructional program.
Parent
Council
A
strong and active parent council is an essential component
of Cumberland Elementary. Parents can be found throughout
the school participating in classroom activities and assisting
teachers and students.
